Chapter 14

Nothing had ever felt more right in my entire life than waking up to Mary lying in my arms. Sometime during the night she had turned and was now facing me as she used my chest for her pillow.

I could tell by her breathing that she was still fast asleep. I allowed myself a few minutes to just savor the feeling of holding her in my arms. I desperately needed this every day for the rest of my life.

I knew she was still a little skittish, but we were already making progress faster than I had expected. My hand roamed across her back, playing with her ponytail, and memorizing the feel of her.

I was so hard it was uncomfortable. If she woke up soon, she’d know it too. I wasn’t sure there was any way to stop that. When she started to stir and stretched against me, I had to fight back a groan. Not being able to touch her the way I really wanted to was killing me.

The worst part was I knew she was going to make me wait until after my graduation before she’d let me seal the bond. That was still months away. Would she make me wait for everything until then? I said a quick prayer that the answer was “no”.

She moaned and made cute little noises in her half-sleep state which wasn’t helping my current situation.

“Good morning,” I finally said when I was sure she was more awake than asleep, plus if her leg went any higher, she was going to learn quickly the effects she had on me.

She startled, then looked up in my eyes and smiled. I knew that smile would right any wrong in my life. It was magical and I’d do anything in my power for this woman to look at me every day of my life.

“What time is it?”

“I don’t know. The sun’s been up for a while though.”

She pulled her arm out from under the blanket and looked at her Swatch.

“Oh no! That can’t be right. I never sleep this late!”

She jumped up and quickly started cleaning up the mess we’d made.

“I’m sorry, but you have to go, like now.”

“Mary, what the hell? What’s wrong?”

“My parents will be home this morning. Anytime now Jason. I’m not ready to answer those questions.”

I relaxed, understanding her dilemma.

“At least let me help you clean up,” I offered.

She shoved me towards the door. “No time for that. I’ve got it,” she insisted. When we got to the front door, she shocked the hell out of me when she rose up on her tippy toes and gave me a quick kiss right on the lips. “Now go,” she said, opening the front door and shoving me out before slamming the door in my face.

I stood there for a few minutes just trying to process what had just happened, then the door opened, and she shoved the paper bag with the five movies I’d rented into my arms.

“Go!” she insisted.

I shook my head and laughed.
